During winter, the skies are often clear and filled with the warmth of the tropical sun. Speaking of rain — the island does have a rainy season that stretches from April to November. During the summer months, like other parts of the Caribbean, the island finds itself in the path of hurricanes. Summers tend to be very humid and muggy. So you have probably already guessed that the best time to come down is during the winter. For example, at one time, American Airlines used to be the primary carrier to and from the island to the U.
If you are traveling from Chicago, New York, Miami and Orlando from the mainland, you are in luck because you can find non-stop flights with several carriers. If you are traveling from other cities however, you will likely be connecting at one of the previously mentioned points. The big airlines are Jetblue and believe it or not, Southwest Airlines.
United and Delta fly to the island as well. If you are looking for discounted airfare, we have found a good experience simply by going to the different carrier sites and pricing tickets. This is particularly true with Southwest because the carrier now offers a number of flights to Puerto Rico at discounted rates.
Hotels and Accommodations Ok here is the real reason you are reading this article on Puerto Rico for gays — the accommodations. You may be wondering if you should stay at a hotel, bed and breakfast or something else. Stay in San Juan Condado Disregard all of the glossy imagery and high priced advertisements you will run across when trying to figure out where to stay when traveling to Puerto Rico.
If you are gay and looking to be around other gay men, stay in San Juan. Most of the beach areas are nice and have lots of gay visitors traversing the sands The main street — Ashford Avenue — is where a lot of gay men walk around and cruise Condado area has lots of good restaurants The gay beach is very nearby in an area called Ocean Park Tip: What about Atlantic Beach Hotel?
You may see it listed in some place that the Atlantic Beach hotel is a great place to stay. You have to walk farther down Condado beach to get to anything nice if you want to lay out.
The Marriot is pretty nice and so is the La Concha Resort. The prices are not only better but you will get a lot more room. Again, look for something in the Condado area and either on the beach or just a few blocks away.
What about Bed and Breakfasts or Guest Houses? Honestly, most of them suck. In our experience, the rooms are tiny and are hardly big enough for one person, let alone two. The pictures may show something that look spacious but when you actually walk into the space, they are pretty small. It has been our experience that many of these places have a shared connection on one router. This makes for super slow speeds and delayed messaging. Now you know why we suggest renting a condo or staying at a quality hotel.
The Internet is kind of a big deal if you are a gay traveler. Where are the gay bars in Puerto Rico? That may sound crazy but it is true. OK — first the gay bars: Circo Bar in Santurce Calle Condado: This is a nightclub located just outside of San Juan. You will have to cab it there. Latin and American dance music, alcohol and loud music. What you would expect in a gay bar. Stripper bar with dance floor and loud, Latin and American dance music. Atlantic Beach Hotel Bar: Ocean front bar that has a happy hour.
It is a nice place for a quick drink but not much more than that. Not a gay bar itself but it might as well be because of the large gay clientele. Modern, clean and very trendy. Great place to grab a sangria before heading out to other places. We think it is a much better alternative than Atlantic Beach. Where to Meet the Guys OK if you are looking to meet hot guys to chill with, hookup or whatever, you are so much better off skipping the bars.
Really, you are going to find the Latin Chicos pretty much right in the San Juan area. Here are some practical suggestions. Many of the locals live near the Condado area and are more than happy to drive into San Juan proper for hookups. Oh — the later at night the better. All we can tell you is that it is small, dank and not particularly special. If you are looking to meet someone, you might want to look elsewhere. Just keeping it real. Lube and Other Supplies If you need to buy lube, condoms and other supplies brown bottles , you can head over to Condom World at Ashford Avenue across the street from the big Walgreens on Ashford.
If you just want lube and rubbers, you can get those from CVS or Walgreens too. Plus, we tend to go grocery shopping when we come here and dine out rarely. One place we are fond of is Latin Star on Ashford Avenue. They offer reasonably priced, authentic Puerto Rican food that tastes really good.
You can dine outside and watch the guys go by over drinks and a dish of Arros con Pollo chicken and rice. Some of these offer day and weekly passes but you will need to check with each individually because the prices seem to change each season. The gyms we have listed here are fairly gay friendly. If you are expecting anything high scale though, think again.
Just wanted to throw that out there so that you have the right expectations. International Fitness Ashford Avenue This is a good gym with a nice collection of free weights and machines — plus cardio equipment. They are closed on Sundays so keep this in mind for your workout plans. It has a nice cardio and free weight area but not exactly a gym for guys who are into body building. Still, for general fitness needs it is pretty nice. They offer spinning classes if you want to get in some good cardio.
Be sure to visit the Rain Forest Gay Puerto Rico Excursions If you are with a group of friends, your partner or whomever, you might want to take a break from the San Juan area and see the rest of the island. There is lots to see in Puerto Rico and it is worth dedicating at least one day to site seeing.
For starters, you can take a quick cab from the Condado area to Old San Juan. This is the area of the island where the cruise ships dock — including many of the gay cruise ships.
Cobble stone streets and old buildings traverse hilly streets. Lots of shopping in this area. Just flag a cab and walk around. Beautiful, stunning scenery with lots of greenery, natural water-falls and beautiful flowers. This is a must see destination for gay couples looking to get their romance on. Tours are easily arranged at most hotels.
