Took me way too long to get it. Word play is just one more reason to be fan of Fair Moans, the queer co-op sex shop coming to Pittsburgh. Fair Moans What is Fair Moans? Fair Moans is a collective of people who have set out to give Pittsburgh a sex-positive, cooperatively-owned sex shop. Now in their beginning stages, they seek to provide: I was an HIV tester and sexual health educator for about 6 years, and I have always had a passion for positive sexual health and body positivity.
That made me want to make my classes accessible for all the kids I was working with. When I started to introduce that to the class, a lot of students really came alive, whether they were queer or not. So I just have a strong interest in having access for everyone, through education. I am a sex and self-love enthusiast. I did a lot of self-teaching and learning from other people about sexuality. What does the end goal of Fair Moans look like? Our hope is to open up a brick and mortar store that is not only a sex shop, carrying products with a focus on body safe products—but also a workshop space within the store, and a space that the community can use.
And, in the sex toy space, sex education materials. A lot of the things that we want to create are not actually available in this city. We have a lot more of the heteronormative spaces. We are envisioning having a store in the city with better access for people, and to have it concentrating on sex-positivity. I keep repeating the word sex-positivity—and I think that what that comes down to.
People are interested in enjoying sex, and they should be. And they are trying to find ways and means of doing that. What is sex-positivity to you? When we embrace that instead of embracing shame, and having to hide who we are, we flourish as humans, not repressing a natural aspect of ourselves.
It makes us all healthier as a society. And I think that comes from not having the tools. More about Fair Moans: When did you start? We had our first meeting in January How would you say Fair Moans is linked with Queer experience? What does it mean for Fair Moans to be a collective, or a cooperative?
We decided that it should be a collective because different people bring different strengths. We all can contribute to it and be able to benefit from it. Speaking of a store, what is available through Fair Moans, now?
We do have limited products for sale right now, including: I just delivered a bottle of lube to my neighbor the other day. So, deliveries can happen, haha! We also are interested in doing workshops. What are some goals for sex ed workshops at Fair Moans? Even just basic sex ed, for everybody. I love teaching people sex ed, especially for adults. Also consent, and how to talk about sex, and how to express your desires.
How can people get involved in your project? Eventually people will be able to support us financially.
